How YOU can help!

earthtouch beaver dam

earthtouch is a growing family, and like any large family, each person has to pitch in and help when and where they can. As a non-profit organization dedicated to reconnecting people with nature, we have no interest in making a profit, but we do need to maintain sustainability with a positive cash flow in order to keep plugging away at our mission.

However, a financial donation isn’t the only way you can help. Check our wish lists below for some things we really need right now. These are all considered charitable contributions and will help immensely.

E-mail us if any of the things on these lists strike a cord. info@earthtouch.org

Carbon off-sets

What is a carbon off-set?

trees at earthtouchEach of our everyday actions consumes energy and produces carbon dioxide emissions. Things such as driving, flying, heating and cooling our homes and offices increase emissions on our planet leading to global warming.

Carbon offsets are becoming an increasingly popular way for people to participate in solutions to global warming. The basic idea of a carbon offset is to figure out your personal contribution level to the global warming problem. This contribution is called a "carbon footprint." The term refers to carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas. You then balance out your carbon impact by ensuring that somewhere else on the planet, an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide is reduced as a result of your offset purchase. Your money funds reductions in greenhouse gas emissions through projects such as developing wind energy, which produce clean energy that displaces energy from fossil fuels, or reforestation projects which directly decrease the carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere. In either case, the environmental benefit is the same. The end result is you balance out, or offset, your own impact by an equivalent amount. Carbon offsets help you take personal responsibility for the environmental consequences of your activities.

Here at earthtouch

Here at earthtouch our mission is to preserve land and promote healthy interaction between people and the natural world. One way for us to do that is to provide our friends with opportunities to offset their carbon ofootprint. NOTE: Our offsets are not “certified” or “verified” and are not traded as legally recognized carbon exchanges. We simply don’t carry enough clout to participate in these “official” programs, our "carbon offsets" are considered to be purely charitable donations. However, make no mistake; your earthtouch offsets will have just the same impact on our planet as those purchased on the big exchanges!

  • “Adopt an Acre” There is a wide variety of habitats and eco-systems present at earthtouch, each an important part of the overall health of our planet.  By making a donation to our “adopt an acre” program you are not only demonstrating your commitment to offset your carbon footprint, but helping us to do the same.  This does not entitle you to make any alterations to the land or any decisions about it’s use, but is simply a concrete way to experience the joy of philanthropy.

Memorial Gardens

memorial garden at earthtocuhIn honor of Lou DeWein, our Memorial Gardens is a living legacy to those moments in our lives where someone or something has guided us and given us the freedom to reconnect with our natural selves. It is in gratitude of these valuable lessons we invite you to sponsor a tree in our Memorial Gardens at earthtouch.

We will plant fruit trees or native trees in celebration of these moments on your behalf. Perhaps a birth, wedding, or the passing of a friend, family member, or pet, marks such a moment worthy of honoring in this unique way. These gifts create habitat and beauty, and provide an avenue to increasing our connection with the land. This also provides an ecologically friendly alternative to sending cut flowers. The cost is $100 for the care of your tree in perpetuity and a small dedication plaque, in addition to the market cost of the tree that is chosen. You may visit the gardens by arranging a visit to the earthtouch nature preserve.

We want to discuss this with you before proceeding, so to plant such a memory at earththouch or for more information, please contact us at: info@earththouchpreserve.org

Leave a Legacy

Nature shows us that life and death are intertwined and continual. Once you take your final walk, our work here at earthtouch can be your enduring legacy.

What you should know

Some people make it clear they wish to have an “In Memory Of…” fund set up for others to donate to earthtouch on their behalf. Others prefer a bequest. You can leave money to your family and to earthtouch. Some people think they must choose between leaving a gift to their family or their favorite charity. You can do both, and some charitable gifts may actually save your family money by decreasing inheritance taxes. In fact, certain portions of your estate such as 401 K plans, are so taxed that very little of the money will end up in the hands of loved ones. However by donating such things to a non-profit, much more of your hard earned money can get put to good use. It’s easy. A simple directive in your will can bring welcome support to earthtouch that will make a difference in our world.

What is a Charitable Bequest?

A charitable bequest is simply a distribution from your estate to a charitable organization through your last will and testament. There are different kinds of bequests. For each, you must use very specific language to indicate the precise direction of your assets, and to successfully carry out your final wishes.

Do you have an Estate?

Your “estate” is the sum of your assets, including property you own, insurance policies, retirement accounts, cash on hand, etc. Wealthy people may have very large estates, but even people who aren’t wealthy often have the resources to make a charitable bequest. If every adult in America made a will and included a bequest of just $100, billions of dollars would flow to charitable causes every year.

Types of Bequests

We always recommend that you carefully review the terms of your will with a professional trained in handling trusts and estates.

  • General Bequests are legacies left to certain people or causes that come from the general value of the estate, and are made by designating a specific dollar amount, a particular asset or a fixed percentage of your estate to the cause of your choice.
  • Specific Bequests are made when particular assets, item or property are bequeathed for a designated purpose. (i.e., land for preservation, equipment, building supplies, etc.)
  • Residuary Bequests are made when you intend to leave the residue portion of your assets after other terms of the will have been satisfied.
  • Contingency Bequests allow you to leave a portion of your estate to earthtouch if your named beneficiary does not survive you.

I do not think the measure of a civilization is how tall its buildings of concrete are, But rather how well its people have learned to relate to their natural world and their fellow man.
